Podcast 32. Dulce Navidad (Escuchar/ Listen)

Sweet Christmas

In Spain Christmas is not Christmas without “turron” and the 12 grapes. There are many typical sweets but the star is the “turron” indeed, a sweet of Moorish origin. There are two types: “the hard one” and the “soft one”, both are made of almonds, honey and sugar. We also have “mazapan” and “polvoron” made of almonds and sugar as well.
We have “turron” after each meal, with coffee or tea in the afternoon and if you have a really sweet tooth every time you pass near the tray that all of us have these days at home.
Another tradition we have takes place on New Years Eve. When the clock strikes 12, the bells sound 12 times and we eat 12 grapes one for each toll of he bell. According to the tradition those who eat grapes following the bell will have twelve months of prosperity and good luck.
To wear something red during that night and to put a gold ring inside the glass used to make a toast to welcome the New Year, will also help you to have a very good year.
You can believe it or not but if I were you I wouldn’t forget any of these rituals… Who knows?
