Podcast 79.

The Big Bottle

Last week a big bottle event was held in a well known park in my city, where 8,000 young people got together. If you take into consideration that there are around 70,000 people living in this city, the fact that 8,000 youths go to a get together like this makes us think that we are facing a social phenomenon.

These outdoor parties sometimes break out spontaneously, but sometimes word is spread by e-mail and text messages and hundreds or thousands of teenagers crowd into city centres armed with bottles of soft drinks generously mixed with alcohol.

This phenomenon, translated into English as “binge drinking”, is seen by local governments as a social problem. It’s impossible to know where it will take place and residents complain about the noise and the rubish that youths, in some cases under 14, leave in the city centres and parks.

In addition, during the past few years, teenagers from cities like Madrid, Barcelona or Bilbao have been trying to outdo one another by organizing the largest gathering.
Under-age drinkers claim that they can enjoy a night out for as little as 6 euros.

Maybe the solution would be to offer teenagers other ways of enjoying themselves without spending too much money.
