Podcast 122. Piratas en la Red (Escuchar/ Listen)

¿Quién no ha bajado alguna vez una canción o una película de internet? Todos los hemos hecho alguna vez, todos hemos buscado esa canción o esa película que nos recomendaron y la hemos descargado sin plantearnos si realmente estabamos haciendo algo “ilegal”.

La industria discográfica cree que si lo es, pide a los gobiernos que regulen la piratería. Francia ha aprobado una ley que castiga a los que descargan de forma abusiva archivos de internet y amenaza con dejarles sin acceso a la red durante 12 meses.

Pero, como ocurre siempre, hay dos versiones del mismo problema, mientras que unos creen que bajar música de la red es comparable con entrar en una tienda, coger un CD y salirse sin pagar, otros opinan que no puede considerarse robar, más bien es copiar, ya que si lo que hacemos es copiar una canción nunca dejamos al propietario sin su propiedad, cosa que si haríamos si le robaramos. Todo depende de a quien le preguntemos.

Los anti-descargas dicen que los músicos pierden dinero con la piratería pero muchos artistas menos conocidos opinan que gracias a internet y las descargas gratis consiguen la publicidad que necesitan.

Deberíamos incluso ir más allá y plantearnos quien, además del artista, gana realmente cuando las descargas son legales o ilegales. Si la descarga es legal, la página web que alberga la música recibe el porcentaje más alto por las descargas, mientras que el artista sólo recibe una pequeña parte y si la descarga es ilegal se beneficia el usuario, el artista gana más o menos lo mismo.

Yo creo que acabaremos aceptando que como en otros muchos casos es muy difícil poner límites en la red, y que las descargas “ilegales” cada vez serán más difíciles de cortar. La policia no va a tenerlo fácil, todos en algún momento hemos sido y seguramente seguiremos siendo “piratas en la red”.



The Downloading Debate

Who hasn’t downloaded the occasional song or film from the internet? Everybody has made it at least once, all of us have looked for that song or that film somebody recommended us and we have downloaded them without considering it “illegal”.

The entertainment industry thinks it’s illegal and asks the governments to regulate piracy. France has introduced a law which punishes persistent abusers and warns them to twelve months without internet access.

But, as always, there are two sides to every story., while some people think than download music from the met is similar to walk into a music store, pick up a CD and leave without paying, others think that it can’t be considered stealing but rather copying, because if you copy a song you never take the property, it would be different if you steal it. It depends on the person you ask.

The anti-downloading claim that the artists lose money to piarcy. However many unknown artists say that thanks to the internet and free downloads they get the exposure they need.

We should even investigate more and think who really earn money besides the artist wether you download legally or illegally. I done legally, the website that hosts the online music benefits a percentage of the takings, the artist only sees a small portion and if the downloading is illegal, the public benefits. The artist earns more or less the same.

I think we will admit that because of the world wide web it’s very difficult to put limits in the net and illegal downloading will become more and more difficult to police, everybody in one moment or another has been and will probably be “ net pirates”
