Podcast 64. Escuelas Multiculturales ( Escuchar/ Listen)

Multicultural Schools

As everybody knows I’m a teacher in a small town in Spain, the school year has just started and I realize the scene has changed a lot in our classes.

Some years ago our students were from the town or the villages around, today our classes are multi-ethnic and our students come from different countries.

In my classroom there are two Chinese, three students from Morocco, a Peruvian one, one from Colombia, one from Bulgaria and a girl from Russia.

Some of them have been living in Spain for some time and they understand and speak the language without problems but some have just arrived and they have problems with communication skills. These students get some help from other teachers who teach them not only the language but also to understand our costumes in many cases very much different to their countries.

The effort is worthwhile, all of them will be able to speak Spanish fluently at the end of the school year.

The experience tells us the language is not the main problem for these teenagers, to adapt to our costumes, to our timetables, to our food… it’s more complicated.

Moving to another country involves accepting very many things but teenagers integrate soon and bring to our classes different points of view, different cultures, dynamism and diversity which enriches our students who become culturally sensitive and capable of participating in a multicultural society.

Newcomers are always welcome here.

Teresa, I love your podcasts and listen to them several times. Sometimes the English translation is a little off but that doesn't really worry me. I just thought that in this one clarification would be good - sorry!
In the last paragraph, where you say :
Trasladarse a otro país supone asumir demasiadas cosas
a better translation would be:
Moving to another country involves accepting very many things

Hope that helps.

Hola Teresa. me encantan sus podcasts. ¡Ojalá usted fuera mi profesora de español! (jajaja).
