Barbie, la muñeca más famosa del mundo, cumplirá 50 años en el 2009 y tiene sus seguidores y sus detractores.

¿Tu que opinas? ¿Crees que Barbie representa a una rubia sin cabeza o crees que se la puede considerar una feminista incondicional?

Su nombre completo es “Barbie Millicent Roberts” y es de Willows, Wisconsin. Tiene cinco hermanas, Skipper, Tutti, Stacie Nelly y Krissy. y las hay de todas las nacionalidades, Barbie Masai, Barbie Princesa de Irlanda, Barbie española vestida con traje de luces, Barbie peruana, japonesa, china, filipina, australiana… y así hasta 45 nacionalidades

Por otra parte, Barbie está representada en todas las profesiones, es top model pero tambien médico, veterinaria, paleontóloga, astronauta, bombero, cantante pop, profesora, estrella de cine incluso hay una Barbie candidata a la presidencia.
Nadie puede negar que a Barbie le interesa mucho su aspecto físico y que desde ese punto de vista podríamos tacharla de “superficial” pero también nos la presentan como una luchadora por el medio ambiente, defensora de los animales, mujer independiente y políglota, etc.

Sin embargo es cierto que cuando queremos referirnos al estereotipo de mujer banal decimos que es una Barbie y la frase son como “Barbie and Ken” , todos sabeis que Ken es el novio de Barbie, se utiliza con frecuencia para referirnos a hombres y mujeres que se comportan siguiendo roles típicos de uno y otro sexo.
Yo jugué con Barbie, solía sentarme en la mesa de vestir Barbies, cepillar su pelo con un cepillo “barbie” y vestírla con su ropa “barbie”, mi favorita era la Barbie azafata y por supuesto quería ser como ella cuando fuera mayor,
Las muñecas eran tan bonitas que no nos planteábamos en ningún momento si representaban o no un estereotipo, simplemente jugabamos a ser como Barbies, hoy, ahora, se ven las cosas
desde otra perspectiva y la verdad, no se si compraría una Barbie a mi hija. Lo dudo.

On the other hand, Barbie is represented in all professions, she is a top model but she is also a doctor, a vet, a paleontologist, an astronaut, a firefighter, a pop singer, a teacher, a film star, she has even been a presidencial candidate..
Anybody can deny that she is pretty interested in her appearance and from this point of view we could say she is “dumb” but they also show her as interested in environment, animals, an independent and polyglot woman, etc. However it’s true that when we want to refer to the stereotype of dumb woman we say that “she is a Barbie” and the phrase they are “Barbie and Ken”, all of you know that ken is Barbie’s boyfriend, is usually used to refer to men and women that behave following the tipycal sex roles.

I played with Barbie, I used to sit a t a Barbie dressing table, brushed Barbie’s hair with a Barbie brush and dressed her in Barbie clothes, my favourite was air hostess Barbie and I wanted to be a hostess when I grew up.
The dolls were so cute that we didn’t think if they were a stereotype or not, we simply played with them but we look at things today from another point of view and I’m not sure if I would buy one for my daughter today. I have my doubts
