Podcast 42. Café (Escuchar/ Listen)


Café

Todos los dias, de 10.30 a 11 me reuno con mis compañeros de trabajo para tomar un café de media mañana. Normalmente tomo té sin azúcar, María prefiere café instantáneo con leche, Santiago normalmente toma zumo, a Manuela le gusta el café soluble pero sin cafeina y Lola, que es argentina, siempre toma mate”.

Al principio sólo tomábamos café o té y algunas galletas pero las cosas han cambiado mucho últimamente. Lola es una buena cocinera y prepara una tarta diferente cada semana: tarta de manzana, tarta de queso, tarta de yogurt… Manuela se ha comprado un horno y las galletas y bollos son su especialidad y los que, como yo, no somos buenos cocineros nos ocupamos del café, el te, los zumos, el azucar y la leche.

Todo está perfectamente organizado y como puedes imaginar se ha convertido en una comida más que en un café de media mañana, sólo hay un pequeño problema, el tiempo de descanso es demasiado corto para tanta delicatessen”.

Coffee Break

Every day from 10.30 to 11.00 I join my colleagues at school for a coffee break.

I usually have tea without sugar, María prefers instant coffee with milk, Santiago usually has juice, Manuela likes instant decaffeinated coffee and Lola, who is from Argentina, always has “mate”.

At first we only had coffee or tea and some biscuits but things have changed a lot lately. Lola is a good cook and she prepares a different cake every week: apple cake, cheese cake, yoghurt cake… Manuela has bought a new oven and cookies and muffins are her specialty,. and the ones , like me, that are not good at baking take care of coffee, teabags, juices, sugar and milk.

Everything is perfectly organised and as you can imagine this has become a lunch more than a coffee break; there is only a problem, the break is too short for so many delicious treats.

Another excellent lesson. Just a short note on US usage. The last part of the translation reads: "the break is too short for so many delicatessen" In the US, a delicatessen is a type of restaurant. A more US friendly translation would read "the break is too short for such a wonderful spread" or perhaps "the break is too short for so many delicious treats" I truly enjoy these podcasts.
