Podcast 52. El Garaje (Escuchar / Listen)

Tengo un garaje pero sólo puedo usarlo para meter el coche durante 6 o 7 meses al año, el resto del año es un cuarto trastero más que un garaje.

Os lo describiré porque se que es difícil que os hagáis una idea de cómo es. Tenemos tres bicicletas, tres maletas, dos cajas de herramientas, una tienda de campaña grande y dos pequeñas, todos los zapatos, deportivos y botas pasados de moda que ya no nos ponemos, dos alfombras viejas y un montón de cosas almacenadas “por si acaso…” como una aspiradora vieja y una plancha que no funciona o una lista interminable de latas de pintura medio vacías, martillos, puntas, destornilladores, limas, llaves inglesas, interruptores, cables, tuercas y tornillos de todas las medidas posibles aunque nunca encuentres los que necesitas.

Mi marido, mis hijos, a todos, excepto a mi les encanta hacer chapuzas en casa y necesitan estar preparados para convertirse en fontaneros, carpinteros, electricistas, albañiles o jardineros y tenemos el equipo básico para todas estas profesiones

Una vez al año, normalmente en Julio que estamos de vacaciones, limpiamos el garaje y tiramos alrededor del 20 por ciento de las cosas que tenemos ahí, no es mucho pero suficiente para tener sitio para el coche durante el frío invierno.

The Garage

I have a garage but I can use it to park my car just 6 or 7 months a year, the rest of the year is a junk room more than a garage.

I’ll describe it as I know it’s hard to imagine what it’s like. We have three bikes, three suitcases, two toolboxes, a big tent and two small ones, all the old-fashioned shoes, trainers and boots we don’t use anymore, two old carpets and a good stock of things we have “just in case…” like an old vacuum-cleaner and an iron that doesn’t work or an endless number of half-empty paint cans, hammers, nails, screwdrivers, files, monkey wrenches, switches, wires, nuts and screws of all sizes although you will never find what you need.

My husband, my kids, everybody but me loves doing “home repair” and they need to be ready to become a plumber, a carpenter, an electrician, a bricklayer or a gardener and we have the basic equipment for these trades.

Once a year, usually in July when we are on holidays we tidy up the garage and we throw away just a twenty per cent of the stuff we have there. It’s not much but just enough to park the car during the cold winter.
