Podcast 75.

My Students Suffer from Stress

Teenagers today live in a very competitive World, they have to succeed at school to have a chance in the job market.

They take on too many tasks and it’s nearly imposible to balance homework, sports, friends, parties, family, the result is that they suffer from stress. They admit they have coffe and energetic drinks to keep awake and alert but caffeine only leads to more stress.

I advice them to exercise. I’ve read somewhere that physical exercise increases certain chemicals in the brain which calm you down.

Another way to avoid stress is by managing their time effectively and I always tell them it’s better to do a few tasks well than lots of tasks badly, they must know their limits and not to assume things they can’t manage and if they panic the best is to sit down quietly and breathe deeply for ten or twenty minutes, clam down and put things into perspective

Podcast 74. Spanglish (Escuchar / Listen)

Spanglish

Spanglish is a new "language" made up from Spanish and English. It’s also called “Espanglish” or “Broken Spanish”. It is a blend of both languages used in the same sentence introducing English terms instead of translating them.

More than 35 million Hispanic residents of the United States speak it.

Some Spanish speakers find funny to hear somebody saying things like “voy a parkear el coche” or “dame las keys”;on the other hand, people like the Director of the New York Cervantes Institute thinks that the mix of both spoils the magnificent of each language.

Nevertheless it doesn’t matter if we like it or not , Spanglish is a reality for millions of Latin Americans living in New York and this language is not only spoken in the streets; it’s also in newspapers where strip cartoons like “La Cucaracha” are published every day. There are also posters, adverts, children’s television programs as “Dora la exploradora” or “Plaza Sesamo”.Likewise they have even translated to this new language a chapter of the Spanish book “Don Quijote de la Mancha”.

This language needs to be regulated but being the third language spoken in New York we are faced with a communication phenomenon that we can’t ignore.

Podcast 73.

Fighting against my laptop

I’ve bought a new laptop and we don’t get well each other. It’s a Mac and it’s being quite hard for me to adapt to this new system. Everybody says that when you are used to a Mac you don’t want to use another one but I wonder: How long is going to take me to get used to it?.

I’ve decided to give me three months, I’m stubborn and persevering but I have to admit that sometimes it gets over me.
The keyboard is my first nightmare, I miss my delete, insert, page up and page down keys and instead of control now I have command and I can’t learn the endless keyboard combinations, when I think I have everything under control I realise I have all my documents in the trash or I can’t connect to the Internet because also the navigator is in the trash ,it’s so easy to drag items that you don’t notice you are doing it.

I try to control the most basic applications using the keyboard, tasks like: to create new folders ,to save. to show information, to undo, to cut, to copy, to see files in colums or lists, to hide, etc and I try to have my desktop, now Dock, more or less organised. The mouse is another matter, I’m used to the two buttons mouse and I find this very hard to handle, well thousands of things that are driving me crazy and that I will have to control in three months. It would be the first time I gave up!

Podcast 72. Rebajas (Escuchar / Listen)

Sales

We are in the season of sales and this morning during my break a colleague told me that he went shopping yesterday and bought a pair of trousers, two pullovers and a T-shirt for 80 euros, “quite cheap” I thought, so cheap that I’ve decided to go shopping this afternoon to look for some “bargains”, despite the fact that every year I promise myself not to spend a single euro on sales.
The truth is that I’m not very good at finding “real bargains”. I need some peace to buy, especially to buy clothes and shoes. I need to look a lot, to try everything on quietly, to think about it and during sales it is exactly the opposite, a lot of people, long queues at the dressing rooms, queues to pay and the feeling that if you have bought something good you have missed something better.
However I don’t resist the temptation to buy and I always end up buying that skirt that cost 100 euros and now it costs 50 , or that pair of boots for 175 euros that I was going to buy just last month and now I can get for only 100.
No matter what you say, I know you wouldn’t be able to resist it.

Podcast 71. Mensajes a Móviles ( Escuchar / Listen)

Mobile Messages

My son is an expert writing text messages in his mobile phone. He only uses the necessary letters , most of the times there are no vowels and all the words are abbreviations, for example he uses “q” instead of “que” and “pq” instead of “porqué” or “tb” by “también” etc. He says it’s to save time and he must save it but I have to read the message twice and sometimes I have to phone him afterwards asking “What are you trying to tell me?”.

They use a new language, the idea is to use short words and cut sentences, it doesn’t mind the grammar neither punctuation, abbreviations and symbols are the base of these text messages and if you are like me an uninitiated, don’t worry because some teenagers aged 13 to 17 have prepared a dictionary with 1,500 translations to help us to understand symbols and abbreviations used to communicate via mobile.

It’s just a matter of practice, I’m sure we will get to write like them.

Podcast 70.

New year New Life

The best day to start doing those things that we find hard to get or to give up bad habits there is no doubt that this day is 1st January because most of people like to think of a new year like a starting point.

To give up smoking, to go on a diet, to learn a new language, to start to do some sport, to save Money, to stop being so lazy or to be more patient with my family and students are some of the things I always leave to that day.
The list is longer every year.

It seems that 1st of January will never come and you feel strong and able to face all the changes when Christmas starts. Last year I made a list of five purposes and put it on the fridge, it was there for a month reminding that me I am a person who doesn’t keep her promises so this year thinking about it I’ve decided to keep my good resolutions secret.
If you don’t do it there is always somebody ready to remind you and if you only have to justify it to yourself it’s easier, as a Spanish saying goes “the rigors of January end in February”

Podcast 69. Tatuajes (Escuchar / Listen)

Tattoos

Have you a tattoo? If the answer is “yes”, then you are one of ten million people who have decided to have a piece of body art.

Nevertheless, tattoos are not forever, statistics say that 50% of Americans who get a tattoo eventually regret it and want it removed.

It must be very boring to see that flower, or that dragon or those Chinese letters on your body every morning or even more difficult to cope if your tattoo has a romantic significance and your relationship fails, it must be a painful reminder to see his or her initials on your arm or your stomach. Look at Angelina Jolie with the name of her former husband Billy Bob tattooed all over her arm, she finally removed it using laser removal,I imagine her new partner didn’t like it at all to see that name tattooed on Angelina’s arm.

So, if you are not very sure but you still want to have a tattoo you can always get it on your left wrist so it can be covered by your watch if you have to.

And, one thing more… don’t forget that there are also temporary tattoos, they are painless, inexpensive a nd easy to remove with baby oil.

Podcast 68.

Let’s go to the cinema

I’m going to go to the cinema, I don’t know what film I’m going to see, I love sitting there watching other people’s stories on the screen.

I’m a bit scaredy-cat so I don’t do well with horror movies, I’ve only seen The Exorcist and some others that experts think you “must see” but the truth is that I pass one hour and a half looking at the floor and I know that sometimes it’s worse what I imagine than the horror film itself.

I’m not a Science fiction fan either but I do like action and romantic movies and I also like fantasy movies and I never get tired of watching films like Willow or The Lord of The Rings.

I usually go to the cinema on Wednesdays, it’s cheaper, Here in my city we pay 6 euros every day except on Wednesdays when we pay………. Euros. I’ve read that there is something similar in America but on Tuesdays. We call it “dial del espectador” and they call it “cheap Tuesday”.

There are three sessions, at 5.30, at 8 and at 10.30. I usually go at 5.30 or 8 and I always follow the same ritual: medium popcorn, medium coke and I sit comfortably in that cozy armchair and I prepare myself to forget everything during the time the film lasts.
