Podcast 81. General Positioning System (Escuchar/ Listen)

No vuelvas a perderte.

Stop getting lost. Buy a GPS.

Some months ago I read this advertisement “ Stop getting lost. Buy a GPS”.

The advert also said that a GPS could tell you not only the best route but also the most interesting places to visit when you arrive in a new city or also it gives you information about hotels, restaurants, etc.

Some days later a local newspaper offered me one at a very low price for buying the newspaper for a whole month. I got it paying 100 euros plus the 30 newspaper bonus , cheap indeed.

So cheap that I’m not sure if it is a very good one or if I don’t know how to use it well.

Anyway I have to admit that it’s amazing how it knows where you are when you connect it or how it plans the route in just a few seconds after choosing a destination. It even reroutes you if you make a wrong turn or decide to go to the petrol station.

And of course, the girl who speaks is very nice.
“Turn right” “Turn left” “ Continue ahead” “ Enter the highway in 200 metres” “ Enter the traffic circle” “Turn around when possible” “You’ve reached your destination”.

However I have to say I don’t trust her and her directions that sometimes don’t make sense. For example “in 200 metres continue ahead” when there is not another way unless I want to crash into the guardrail; or when she tells me to take the fourth road at the traffic circle and there are only three, or she tells me turn to the right when I’m reading a huge sign on the road telling me to turn left.

Before buying the GPS I looked at the map before going on a trip, now I look at the map and program my GPS. And if I know well where I’m going I download the “English with British accent” version and I practice my oral comprensión which is always an advantage.

You must be positive!.

Podcast 80. Chistes (Escuchar/ Listen)

Chistes

Jokes

Have you ever told a joke and regretted doing so because nobody laughed? Or perhaps you have laughed your head off at something only to realise that everyone else is looking at you in amazement?

There is no doubt that humour is a very personal thing and what is funny for some people is not funny at all for others.

Spanish people like to tell jokes during after-lunch conversations or at meetings, but to make laugh is not so easy. Some people have born with the ability to tell jokes, pull faces and play the fool.

It’s not my case, I usually spoil the jokes other tell me.
We have jokes for everybody, for Andalusian, Galician, Basque, Catalan. The same as English have jokes for Scottish, Welsh or Irish people.

Nevertheless some subjects are universally accepted and understood, I’m thinkg about “marriage” or “blonde women” jokes, natural or bottled, it doesn’t matter because all of us, even the blondes like me, understand these jokes
.

And I want to finish this podcast with two jokes:

- A man inserted an advert in the classifieds “Wife wanted”. The next day he received a hundred letters, they all said “You can have mine”

- How do you make a blonde laugh on monday morning? Tell her a joke on Friday night

Just one more thing "smile prolongs your life" so we should laugh at least twice a day.

Don´t you agree?

Podcast 79.

The Big Bottle

Last week a big bottle event was held in a well known park in my city, where 8,000 young people got together. If you take into consideration that there are around 70,000 people living in this city, the fact that 8,000 youths go to a get together like this makes us think that we are facing a social phenomenon.

These outdoor parties sometimes break out spontaneously, but sometimes word is spread by e-mail and text messages and hundreds or thousands of teenagers crowd into city centres armed with bottles of soft drinks generously mixed with alcohol.

This phenomenon, translated into English as “binge drinking”, is seen by local governments as a social problem. It’s impossible to know where it will take place and residents complain about the noise and the rubish that youths, in some cases under 14, leave in the city centres and parks.

In addition, during the past few years, teenagers from cities like Madrid, Barcelona or Bilbao have been trying to outdo one another by organizing the largest gathering.
Under-age drinkers claim that they can enjoy a night out for as little as 6 euros.

Maybe the solution would be to offer teenagers other ways of enjoying themselves without spending too much money.

Podcast 78. Gastos (Escuchar / Listen)

Gastos

Expenses

Have you ever wondered where your money went at the end of the month? I wondered every month so I decided to investigate.

During a whole month I wrote down all the expenses I had, I thought that if I knew where my money was going I could organize myself and reduce expenses. It was the first step to put my financial house in order.

To calculate the expenses and to create a budget after comparing my average monthly expenses to my total monthly income. So, I bought a small notebook where I wrote down everything: 1 euro for the bus, 70 cents a cup of coffee, 9 euros for lunch, 1 euro for the newspaper, 65 cents a bottle of water and 1 euro for a cup of tea.
Once a week I go to the supermarket to buy food and stuff for home and I spend around 100 euros. I also spent 40 euros in petrol during this month and then the overheads : 30 euros my mobile phone, 36 euros the gym, 50 euros electricity, 20 euros the Internet conexion, gas…
and the extra expenses: car repair, clothing, gifts, insurance, etc.
At the end of the month I sat down and reviewed my notes, I found I had spent much more than I thought. The next step was to look for ítems I can do without to reduce expenses. This is my short list: I don’t really need the morning coffee, I can take lunch to work and instead of going to the cinema I can rent a DVD.

Total savings: 10 euros a week, more or less. I am not sure if it is worth trying to change my habits to save 10 euros a day.

Podcast 77. Hablar. Hablar. Hablar (Escuchar/ Listen)

Hablar, conversar, charlar, contar, gritar, suspirar, etc.

Are you a talkative person?

There are people who can’t stop talking, we say in Spanish “they talk their heads off” and people who simple find it difficult to make conversations with others. There are as many words and expressions as ways to communicate. To speak, to talk, to chat, to tell, to shout, to whisper, there are some important differences among them, for example, speaking is not the same as talking, speaking is saying words and talking is having a conversation.

Spanish people talk a lot, if we don’t know well the person we are talking to, neighbours, the man who sells us the nespaper, the woman in the bus…. Then we make small talks about the weather, sports, or general subjets and if we have to inform somebody about something that has happened we say “I have to tell you something” and to tell something means to give all the details and when we speak about other people’s lives, then we gossip.

When we are very angry with somebody we give him a good talking-to and we usually shout, not because the other person is deaf but because we want to show how angry we are and the other one usually tries to shout even louder than you.

And the opposite, when I only want the other person to hear me I go closer and whisper, and whispering is speaking in a very low voice.
If a person speaks in a very low voice and we can hardly hear him we say that he speaks for the collar of his shirt.

One thing is clear, talkative people become more friendly than quiet people.

Podcast 76. Elecciones Generales (Escuchar / Listen)

Are You Going to Vote in the next Election?
General elections will be held in my country on March, 9th and I would like to explain you our electoral system.
Political parties choose their candidates and publish their names in a list in order from most to less important candidates and citizens vote for parties not for individual candidates.

There are two big political parties in Spain, PSOE Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party, left wing party led by Jose Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and PP People’s Party, right wing party that is lead by Mariano Rajoy.

There are 350 seats in the Lowe House or Congreso of Deputies and 208 seats in the Upper House or Senate. The Congreso of Deputies must appoint the Prime Minister (President) usually the leader of the most voted party unless a coalition of different parties has a majority of seats.

Political leaders try to convince voters and the pre-campaign begins 8 weeks befote the election, all the canvassing must cease two days befote the election day and no campaign is permitted either in the last day, day of reflection, or at election day, usually a Sunday

We vote at electoral collegues, usually at schools or civic centers.

Both parties try to win over undecided voters, according to polls Zapatero is ahead in the elections but the truth is that nothing is decided yet, the best message is to convince electors that it’s necessary to vote.

The Campaign is just starting and the die is cast.

Podcast 75.

My Students Suffer from Stress

Teenagers today live in a very competitive World, they have to succeed at school to have a chance in the job market.

They take on too many tasks and it’s nearly imposible to balance homework, sports, friends, parties, family, the result is that they suffer from stress. They admit they have coffe and energetic drinks to keep awake and alert but caffeine only leads to more stress.

I advice them to exercise. I’ve read somewhere that physical exercise increases certain chemicals in the brain which calm you down.

Another way to avoid stress is by managing their time effectively and I always tell them it’s better to do a few tasks well than lots of tasks badly, they must know their limits and not to assume things they can’t manage and if they panic the best is to sit down quietly and breathe deeply for ten or twenty minutes, clam down and put things into perspective

Podcast 74. Spanglish (Escuchar / Listen)

Spanglish

Spanglish is a new "language" made up from Spanish and English. It’s also called “Espanglish” or “Broken Spanish”. It is a blend of both languages used in the same sentence introducing English terms instead of translating them.

More than 35 million Hispanic residents of the United States speak it.

Some Spanish speakers find funny to hear somebody saying things like “voy a parkear el coche” or “dame las keys”;on the other hand, people like the Director of the New York Cervantes Institute thinks that the mix of both spoils the magnificent of each language.

Nevertheless it doesn’t matter if we like it or not , Spanglish is a reality for millions of Latin Americans living in New York and this language is not only spoken in the streets; it’s also in newspapers where strip cartoons like “La Cucaracha” are published every day. There are also posters, adverts, children’s television programs as “Dora la exploradora” or “Plaza Sesamo”.Likewise they have even translated to this new language a chapter of the Spanish book “Don Quijote de la Mancha”.

This language needs to be regulated but being the third language spoken in New York we are faced with a communication phenomenon that we can’t ignore.
