Podcast 89. Trabajar en Verano (Escuchar/ Listen)

Felipe y Esther están buscando un trabajo para este verano, los dos son socorristas y los últimos años han estado trabajando en la costa española, pero este verano no encuentran nada y están bastante desesperados.

Encontrar trabajo de temporada se ha convertido en algo bastante complicado, ya no es suficiente con dejar el currículo en unos cuantos hoteles u oficinas y esperar a que te llamen.

Han probado en parques temáticos, clubs, piscinas, centros deportivos, compañías dedicadas a organizar viajes, restaurantes, bares, hoteles… durante una semana han pateado las calles, leído todas las ofertas de trabajo de los periódicos y todas las ofertas de Internet sin ningún resultado. Han echado solicitudes para trabajar de socorristas, animadores, camareros de restaurante y bar, recepcionistas de hotel, camareros de habitaciones, etc.

En algunos sitios necesitan gente pero piden experiencia y que hablen al menos dos idiomas. Mira uno de estos anuncios que encontraron en Internet.

Se necesita camarero para restaurante.

Debe ser una persona digna de confianza, honesta, trabajadora, extrovertida, agradable y con buena presencia.
Debe tener al menos un año de experiencia como camarero y dos años más como cocinero y ser capaz de trabajar con un grupo amplio de personas.

Tus responsabilidades en el puesto son:

Eres responsable de todo lo que se cocine en el restaurante.
Responsable de la apertura y el cierre y de la limpieza (platos, suelos, baños)
Responsable de pedidos e inventario

Horas: Entre 48 y 50 horas semanales, 6 días a la semana incluidos fines de semana y festivos
Salario: Salario mínimo establecido

Como veis muchas responsabilidades, muchas horas, mucho trabajo y poco dinero. De todos modos han dejado allí su CV. Quieren trabajar, no les importa ni el número de horas ni las responsabilidades.

Además no hay donde elegir.


Working in Summer

Felipe and Esther are looking for a Summer job, both are lifeguards and they have been working as lifeguards in the Spanish coast for the last summers but this year they can’t find anything and they are quite desperate.

Finding a summer job is a bit more complicated than it used to be, no longer is a simple matter of leaving your CV and wait.

They have tried theme parks, clubs, swimming pools, tour companies, restaurants, bars, hotels… They have hit the pavement, they have read the newspaper adverts and they have surfed the net for a whole week without any result. They have applied to work as lifeguards, hotel animators, waiters in restaurants and bars, receptionists, chambermaids, etc.

In some places they are looking for people with experience and speaking at least two languages.

Look at the requirements to work in a restaurant:

You must be dependable, honest, hard-working, outgoing, friendly and with neat appearance.
You must have, at least one year experience as a waiter and two years more cooking and be able to work with other staff.

Your responsabilities are:
You are responsable for total food cooking, you are responsable for opening, closing and all cleaning (dishes, moping, bathrooms)
You are responsable for ordering list and inventory.

Hours: 48-50 hours a week, 6 days a week and weekends and festivities included.
Salary: Minimum wage

As you can see a lot of responsabilities, many hours, a lot of work and little money. Anyway they have left their CV there. They want to work, they don’t mind the number of hours or the responsabilities.

Teléfonos móviles en el cine

¿Alguna vez te han llamado por teléfono cuando estabas en el cine viendo una película?

Probablemente si porque a veces se nos olvida apagar el teléfono, pero seguro que no has contestado.

Si vives en América y contestas al teléfono en el cine o algún otro lugar donde se este celebrando un acto de este tipo puede que tengas que pagar una multa de hasta 50 euros.

La verdad es que es bastante desagradable cuando la gente usa el móvil en estos sitios. Yo no puedo evitar escuchar la conversación y acabo perdiéndome buena parte de la película.

Con lo fácil que es apagar el móvil, meterlo en el bolso y disfrutar del espectáculo!

Pero lo cierto es que hay personas que no soportan estar desconectadas ni un minuto.

Sólo hace diez años que llegábamos a casa después de trabajar y mirábamos a ver si había mensajes en el contestador y la mayor parte de las veces no teníamos ninguno.

Ahora hablamos a todas horas por el móvil y recibimos mensajes constantemente.

Vaya cambio!

Mobile telephones at cinemas

Have you ever received a call when you were in a cinema watching a movie?

The answer is probable “yes” because we sometimos forget to mute it, but I’m sure you haven’t answered it.

If you live in America and you talk in the mobile phone in a cinema or any other place of public performance you may have to pay a 50 euro fine.

The truth is that it’s quite annoying when people use their mobiles in these places, I can’t avoid to listen to the conversations and I end up missing parts of the film.

The easiest is to turn the mobile off, put it in your pocket and enjoy the performance! But some people can’t be disconnected not even a minute.

Only ten years ago we arrived home after working and we checked our fixed answerphone for messages and most of the times we hadn’t any.

Now we talk on the phone from morning to night and we get a lot of messages.

What a transformation!

Podcast 87. Snacks de Insectos (Escuchar / Listen)

Voy a preparar una cena en casa para celebrar mi ascenso en el trabajo y he decidido preparar unos aperitivos.

Estoy cansada de hacer siempre los mismos, de jamón, de gambas, de salmón, de anchoa y quiero hacer algo diferente así que he estado buscando ideas en Internet.

He encontrado algo sorprendente “insectos frescos cocinados”, cucarachas fritas, grillos asados, gusanos con sabor a queso cheddar, escorpiones cubiertos de chocolate y otras clases de insectos fritos o cocidos que se anuncian como algo nuevo y muy sano.

He estado tentada de pedir algunas variedades que se ofrecen a precios muy razonables perola idea de decir a mis invitados que están comiendo cucarachas, hormigas o saltamontes me ha echado atrás, aunque bien pensado comemos todo tipo de bichos raros como gambas, erizos de mar, caracoles, ostras y seguramente con el tiempo lleguemos a ver como algo normal este tipo de comida que nos ofrecen los restaurantes Tailandeses.

Las críticas son muy buenas, sus defensores dicen que son muy sabrosos que tienen muchas proteinas y son bajos en grasas, es por lo tanto una comida sana. Sin embargo creo que no voy a atreverme a servirlos en mi mesa, no de momento.

Creo que esperaré hasta que los vendan en el supermercado de mi ciudad.

Insect Snacks

I’m going to have a dinner at my home to celebrate my promotion at work, and I’ve decided to serve some snacks.

I’m fed up with always preparing the same things: ham snacks, salmon, shrimp snacks, anchovy snacks, etc. I want to do something different so I’ve been looking for ideas on the Internet.

I’ve found something amazing: “freshly cooked insects”, fried beetles, roasted crickets, cheddar cheese flavored worms, chocolate covered scorpions and other kinds of insects, fried or boiled, offered as something new and very healthy.

I’ve been tempted to order some, because they are reasonably priced, but the idea of telling my friends that they are eating beetles, ants or grasshoppers has backed me off. Although, thinking about it, we eat a lot of rare seafood like shrimps, sea urchins, snails, oysters and it’s quite probable that very soon we will get used to this kind of food offered by Thai restaurants.

The reviews are very good, according to their fans they are very tasty, and are also high in proteins and low in fat, and so therefore very healthy. However, I think that I’m not going to dare to serve them on my table, not yet. I believe I will wait until they sell them in the supermarket in my city.

La Eurocopa acaba de empezar y tenemos fútbol para elegir.

Olvidaros del tradicional mensaje de las tarjetas de San Valentín. El amor ya no es para siempre.

De hecho, para la mayoría, no pasa de 30 meses, por supuesto estamos hablando de “amor romántico” no de “amor racional”.

Como todos los estudios serios, que este lo es, hay una profesora, Cindy Hazan, que ha entrevistado a 3000 personas de 37 culturas diferentes y ha descubierto que tanto biológica como físicamente no estamos preparados para estar enamorados más de 30 meses.

Pero parece que esta clase de amor es mucho más difícil de conseguir y mantener y mucho menos frecuente que el amor romántico.

El estudio también dice que los hombres se enamoran más fácilmente y más rápido que las mujeres y que a menudo son estas las que ponen fin a una relación.

Creo que después de vivir 25 años con la misma persona he superado ya con creces el límite de los 30 meses y debo estar ya en la etapa del “amor racional”.

¿Cómo puedo re-usar o reciclar esto? Hay un Blog en internet con este título donde puedes encontrar montones de ideas sobre como reciclar.

Ideas sorprendentes para reciclar cosas sorprendentes como: espuma para el pelo, espirales de cuadernos, piezas de lego, o cosas que te regalan en San Valentín.

Todo tiene un segundo e incluso en ocasiones hasta un tercer uso.

Reciclar está de moda. El pensamiento ecológico nos invade, quizá porque nos preocupamos más por el medio ambiente o quizá porque no está bien visto no hacerlo.

La verdad es que la razón que nos lleve a reciclar es lo de menos si conseguimos que se convierta en un hábito.

En todas las ciudades tenemos puntos limpios con contenedores para separar papel, metal, cristal, residuos orgánicos, plástico, baterías, etc, por lo tanto no hay disculpa posible para no reciclar.

Yo, por mi parte, para contribuir a la protección del medio ambiente he emprendido en mi casa una campaña anti-bolsas de plástico, aquí usamos una media de 12 bolsas de plástico desechables en la compra semanal, así que he comprado bolsas de algodón re-utilizables, ligeras. fuertes y resistentes.

Sé que mi contribución no es muy importante, sobre todo si tienes en cuenta que en algunos países han retirado las bolsas de plástico de los supermercados y que otros están intentando reducir su uso ofreciendo gratis bolsas reciclables. Pero …… “algo es algo”


Do you Recycle?

How can I reuse or recycle this?. There is a blog on the Internet where you can find lots of ideas about reusing things.
Amazing ideas to recycle, amazing things like: hair gel, spiral bound notebooks, lego bricks or Valentine’s Day things. Everything has a second or even a third use.
To recycle is in fashion. Ecological thinking has emerged in our society, maybe because we are concerned about the environment, maybe because a person who doesn’t recycle is considered bad nowadays.
The truth is that it doesn’t matter the reasons to we recycle, only that it becomes a habit.

We have eco-points with bins to separate paper, metal, glass, bio-waste, plastic, batteries, etc. So there is no excuse for not doing it.

I want to contribute to the protection of the environement and I’ve started an anti-plastic bag campaign at home. We use an average of 12 plastic bags per week, so I’ve bought cotton reusable ones – light, strong and resistant recyclable bags.

I know that my contribution is not very important, mainly if you consider that some countries have banned plastic bags from supermarkets and others are trying to reduce their use, offering free recyclable bags. Anyway … half a loaf is better than none.

Podcast 83. La Estantería (Escuchar / Listen)

Cambiemos esta estantería. Es tan fácil de decir como difícil de hacer.

Llevamos viviendo en esta casa veinte años y parece mentira la cantidad de cosas que uno puede llegar a almacenar en veinte años. Casi cinco metros de pared cubierta de estanterías, dos filas de libros por estante, pilas de papeles, bolígrafos, lapiceros de todos los colores, viejos discos de vinilo, cajas llenas de fotografías, diapositivas, cintas de video, cassetes, etc.

Era un buen momento para reorganizar y hacer algo de limpieza, la idea era deshacernos de las cosas que ya no necesitamos y donar algunos libros y enciclopedias. Compramos unas cajas de mudanza y nos pusimos manos a la obra.

El caso es que después de pesar dos días vaciando la vieja estantería y revisando libros, papeles y fotografías, nos dimos cuenta de que no había tantas cosas de las que quisieramos deshacernos.

Después de cuatro días de trabajo lo que hemos hecho ha sido cambiar las estanterías viejas por unas nuevas y volver a colocar todo otra vez y aunque ya no tenemos giradiscos para escuchar los discos de vinilo ni video para ver las cintas todo ha vuelto a su sitio. Quizá dentro de 20 años nos decidamos a usar las cajas de mudanza para tirar todo eso.

De momento, todo está en su sitio, eso si…los CDs estan ahora por orden alfabético.

The Bookshelf

Let’s change the Bookshelf! This is so easy to say, and difficult to do.

We have been living in this house for twenty years now and you may find it hard to believe the large amount of things we have stored during these years. Nearly five metres of wall covered with shelves, two rows of books per shelf, piles of papers, ballpoints, coloured pencils, old vinyl records, boxes full of photographs, slides, video tapes, cassetes, etc.

It was a good moment to reorganize and clean up. The idea was to sort out the things we don’t use and to donate some books and encyclopedias. We bought some moving boxes and we got down to work.

The thing is that after spending two days clearing out the old bookshelf and going through books, papers and photos, we realised there were not so many things we wanted to get rid of.

After four days of working we have changed the old bookshelves to new ones and we have put everything back again. And although we haven’t a turntable for vinyl records nor video for video tapes, everything has been returned to its place. Perhaps in 20 years, we may decide to use the moving boxes to throw all of these things away.

At the moment, everything is tidy, and … the CDs are now in alphabetical order.

Podcast 82. Guerra de Preguntas (Escuchar/ listen)

Guerra de preguntas

Mis alumnos no son muy buenos haciendo preguntas en inglés asi que decidí preparar un juego para motivarles.

Elegí dos alumnos al azar que serían los capitanes y fueron eligiendo a los miembros de sus equipos.

El segundo paso era ponernos de acuerdo en las reglas del juego:

Cada equipo debe preparar un mínimo de 4 preguntas por alumno
El alumno que no sabe responder se sienta
No se puede preguntar dos veces a la misma persona, todos deben participar
Empieza a preguntar el alumno que fue elegido en último lugar
Cada alumno tiene 20 segundos para responder, etc.

Establecimos también de mútuo acuerdo las penalizaciones y por supuesto el premio que consiste en medio punto en la nota final para todos los miembros del grupo ganador que será el que gane al menos 3 de cinco juegos.

El juego empezó con preguntas inocentes y fáciles como: ¿Cuál es tu deporte favorito? ¿Qué haces los fines de semana? “¿Qué te gustaría comer el dia de tu cumpleaños?, etc.

Pero a medida que pasaban las semanas, jugamos un día a la semana durante media hora, las preguntas se iban complicando mas y más:
¿Qué día va antes de pasado mañana? ¿Qué opinas del calentamiento global?. Si te casas con Ines de Arriba, ¿Cuál será el primer apellido de tu primera hija?. Teniendo en cuenta que en España los hijos siempre llevan el apellido del padre, puedes hacerte una idea de sus intenciones.

Me he dado cuenta de que son muy competitivos, nunca pensé que llegaran a tener tanto interés por preguntar y responder correctamente y no creo que peleen sólo por ese medio punto, creo que hay algo más en juego.

Trato de ser un árbitro justo pero es difícil cuando 26 adolescentes divididos en dos grupos quieren tener razón. La verdad es que todo lo que sirva para aprender y les motive merece la pena, incluso el dolor de cabeza que me ponen cuando todos chillan queriendo tener razón.

Questions War

My students are not very good at questions so I decided to prepare a game to motivate them. I chose two students at random, they would be the captains and they chose the members of their teams.

The second step was to reach an agreement on the rules:

Each team must prepare at least four questions per student
The student who fails to answer sits down
They can’t ask the same person twice, all of them must participate
The student who was chosen last is the one who starts asking
Each student has 20 seconds to answer, etc.

We also made clear the penalties by mutual agreement and, of course, the prize consists of half a point in the final mark for all members of the winning team. The winning team will have to win at least 3 games out of 5.

The game started with innocent easy questions like : Which is your favourite sport?. What do you do at weekends? What would you like to eat on your birthday?, etc.

But as weeks went on, we play once a week for half an hour, the questions become more and more difficult:
What is the day that goes before the day after-tomorrow? What do you think about global warming?. If you get married to Inés de Arriba, What will your daughter’s surname be?... Bearing in mind that in Spain the offspring always takes the father’s surname, you can imagine their intentions.

I have realised that they are very competitive. I never thought they would be so interested in asking and answering correctly and I don’t think they are just fighting for that half a point, I believe that there is something more at stake.

I try to be a good referee but it’s very difficult when 26 teenagers divided into 2 groups try to be right. The truth is that everything useful to learn and motivate them is worth it. Even the headache I get when all of them shout trying to be right.
