Podcast 58. ¿Donde Quedamos? (Escuchar/ Listen)

Where shall we meet?

It seems easy to meet somebody and if the two people are always on time it is even easier, isn’t it?

The answer is “it depends”, I always have problems when I try to meet my husband. something always happens, for instance if we arrange to meet in a pub or at the cinema, I assume that we will meet by the door and he assumes he must wait inside, so we may end up waiting in the wrong place for 15 or 20 minutes. If we arrange to meet in a street each one understands a different place and sometimes even a different street and we end up in a very bad mood thinking that it's always the other one that doesn't understand.

The other problem may be the time, if we talk about an exact time we may not be wrong but if we are doing something and we say we will meet “when we finish” or “in 10 or 15 minutes” or "at most in half an hour” then we never meet and we end up seeing each other at home.

Lately we try to make clear where and when even checking if our watches have the same time but this is not infallible, we still misunderstand each other and the only thing that helps us a little is the mobile phone and not always because most of the times we don’t hear it.

We are, like Pink Floyd says in the song “Wish You Were Here”, just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl ….. without meeting

Podcast 57. Supersticiones (Escuchar / Listen)

¿Eres Supersticioso?

Are you Superstitious?

Most of us would answer “not at all ” but I’m sure we avoid walking under a ladder if we can ,and it makes us shiver when we see a black cat or crow on the left side of the road and if we break a mirror we bury the pieces in the courtyard quickly in case the legend about having seven years of bad luck comes true.

I am not superstitious but I always wear something red on New Year’s Eve and I put something made from gold inside the glass to drink a toast to the New Year and if I spill some salt I immediately throw it over my left shoulder to strike the nasty spirits and to prevent sickness.

If I am with a friend and she buys a lottery ticket, I always buy one as well, just in case! …. And I always carry a rabbit's foot that a friend gave me telling me it was a good luck charm which would give me good luck and success and to be honest I don’t dare to leave it at home, I would never forgive myself if things began to go wrong.

Each country, each village has its own legends and superstitions, some of them are known all over the world although sometimes there are small differences. In my country people say “You mustn’t get married or embark on something on Tuesdays 13th”,nevertheless;: the American and the British think that the worst day to do it is on Friday 13th.

It seems that “luck” distinguishes an American from a Spaniard. I know it’s a bit ridiculous but the truth is that there are so many other of the year to choose from, that I personally wouldn’t choose Tuesday or Friday 13th.

Anyway, if somebody asks me “ Are you a superstitious person? “ I would answer “No, I’m only cautious, one never knows”. Ah! ! Don’t forget “touch wood”

Podcast 56.

The Congress

The congresses, conferences, training courses and workshops mean a lot of hours sitting, listening and keeping attention. In two or three days you are supposed to assimilate all the information that speakers have been collecting and working on for a long time.

Techniques have changed a lot lately and the last congress I attended there was a great deployment of technical resources.

The speaker who opened the conference used a digital blackboard, with its special pen, everything he wrote or drew on this blackboard got automatically transferred onto a computer screen that we could see from anywhere in the room. He didn’t have to look down at a paper or to read so he was looking at the audience all the time.

The next one used a laptop and a projector for her presentation; she used PowerPoint for presenting information in a slide show format with texts, pictures, graphs, sound effects and video that made the presentation easy to follow and to understand.

Finally we went to the computer where we followed the workshop on our own laptop.

Of course there weren’t photocopies, nowadays you get a USB flash drive and in 1 GB you can carry ten presentations, ten workshops, four conferences, pictures, video, music and much more.

More and more the Spanish saying “ el saber no ocupa lugar” is a reality.

Podcast 55.

The Globalization is something serious

If you move to another country you will realize that many things are amazingly similar to your homeland with the loss of identity involved with this. You can spend some time in a foreign country without missing your food, your clothes, and your favourite coffee. You can get everything everywhere.

For instance, you can have the same hamburger in Dublin, Madrid or New York; you can buy the same T-shirt, the same pair of trainers, have that drink you like… The globalization has this effect, we all have the same appearance.

Spain has always been a resort for foreigners and I remember when I was a teenager I could immediately notice if people in front of me were Americans, English or French, they wore different clothes and their general appearance was quite different. Now we don’t distinguish them from Spaniards, the same cap, the same trousers, the same MP3 or mobile phone, nothing changes.

We only know where they are from when they talk and I wonder: Wouldn’t be better if we spoke the same language and use different T-Shirts?

Podcast 53.

Beach or mountain

Every year during these dates we have the same problem, Where do we go on holidays? Beach or mountain? And as every year it’s impossible to reach an agreement.

I love warm weather, the beach, the sand, sunbathing and swimming. My husband likes cold weather, the mountain, walking and sleeping with a blanket and my sons always want to go where their friends go.Besides I enjoy camping and they prefer hotel or apartment.

To argue about if it’s better beach or mountain is the same as to fight about if it’s better Coke or Pepsi, meat or fish, blonde or brunette. Everybody has his own reasons and nobody can persuade each other otherwise.

We end up spending pass 5 days on a beach and 5 days trekking and breathing fresh air somewhere far from the tourism.

I can’t convince him that there is nothing better than the beach and the sun and a good beer near the sea to recharge batteries to pass the winter and he can’t make me share his theory, he thinks that the best way to renew one's energy is the peace of the countryside and the walks enjoying nature.

This year, at last we have had an agreement, 5 days in the mountains and 10 days at the beach, je je je… it’s not a bad agreement.

Podcast 52.

The Garage

I have a garage but I can use it to park my car just 6 or 7 months a year, the rest of the year is a junk room more than a garage.

I’ll describe it as I know it’s hard to imagine what it’s like. We have three bikes, three suitcases, two toolboxes, a big tent and two small ones, all the old-fashioned shoes, trainers and boots we don’t use anymore, two old carpets and a good stock of things we have “just in case…” like an old vacuum-cleaner and an iron that doesn’t work or an endless number of half-empty paint cans, hammers, nails, screwdrivers, files, monkey wrenches, switches, wires, nuts and screws of all sizes although you will never find what you need.

My husband, my kids, everybody but me loves doing “home repair” and they need to be ready to become a plumber, a carpenter, an electrician, a bricklayer or a gardener and we have the basic equipment for these trades.

Once a year, usually in July when we are on holidays we tidy up the garage and we throw away just a twenty per cent of the stuff we have there. It’s not much but just enough to park the car during the cold winter.

Podcast 51. Mala Memoria (Escuchar/ Listen)

Bad Memory

If you are an absentminded person and in addition you have a bad memory the result usually is a disaster. You often arrive home from the supermarket carrying half of the things you need and sometimes when you are in the queue you realize you have left the money and credit cards at home.

You need to buy an average of three umbrellas as you don’t know where you left them and spend at least 10 minutes every morning looking for the car keys that are usually with the sunglasses at the weirdest places.

I know some things are difficult to sort out but trying to solve this problem I decided to write lists. So I made lists with the things I had to do every day and lists with the unfinished tasks and the places I had to go. Lists where I wrote everything I had to buy, the books or CDs people recommend me, the dates I can’t forget if I want to be considered a good mum, wife, daughter, sister, etc...

The lists worked at first, mainly when I had only 2 or 3 but everything became complicated when I forgot where I had written things. I was about to write a list of the lists when a friend told me that she uses a notebook and that if I am able to keep my notebook with me wherever I go I will have solved all my problems forever….

If not I will need your advice, maybe there is somebody among the listeners that has invented something miraculous for absentminded and forgetful people like me.
