Podcast 125. Ven a España. Come to Spain (Escuchar/ Listen)

¿Has decidido venir a España este verano?

Come to Spain

Have you decided to come to Spain this summer? If your answer is “yes” there are some things you should know before coming. The best places to go, the best things to do and some secrets to get the very best of your vacation

There are some places you have to visit:

Spain was ruled by Moorish Muslims for 800 years and they left amazing buildings like The Alhambra in Granada and The Mezquita in Córdoba.
Talking about architecture, we can’t forget Gaudi and his buildings in Barcelona, Park Guell, La Sagrada Familia or La Pedrera among others.

There are cathedrals in every important city in this country but Santiago Cathedral and Salamanca Cathedral are a must.

If you like modern architecture Guggenheim Museum in bilbao and Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in Valencia are wonderful.

We can’t forget the “plazas” they are places to socialize , plazas have their “life style”. Visit Plaza de España in Sevilla, Plaza Mayor in Madrid y Plaza Mayor in Salamanca and if you like walled cities, Zamora, Avila an Toledo must be in your plans.

Where can I get the best ham? Ham is a tradition in my country, not only to eat it but also to cut it, Spanish cut ham with the same regard that others decant wine. The best ham comes from Salamanca. Huelva and the Alpujarras region, near Granada, though you can get good ham all around the country. When you order ham , look out for the words “bellota” which indicates the pig was reared on acorns and it’s called “pata negra” (black leg), it’s the best quality.

Where can I get the best cider? Cider is served just in some areas in Spain, but where it’s popular it’s a religion. You will have to travel to Oviedo, Gijon or some village in Asturias if you want to drink cider. It’s not easy to serve cider, it has to be thrown, poured from a height of around 30 cm and you must drink it at once because cider oxidizes quickly and becomes flat. If you go to Asturias you will see that every waiter knows how to “throw” cider, you only have to drink it.

Where can I see a flamenco show? The best flamenco is to be found at a gypsy wedding. But you are not going to be invited so the only way to see a flamenco show is going to the ones offered, mainly for tourists in Andalusia.

Can I stay until 6 am and beyond? Yes, you can. Spain’s nightlife is famously late and long, you can go all night in nearly every city in this country, specially in summer and I can assure you that you’ll never feel alone

Podcast 124.

Let's go to have tapas

Somebody who listens to me from Norway and that visits Spain during summer has asked me some ineresting questions about the non-written rules when you go to have tapas in Spain.

Tapas are served all over the country and it’s not a particular type of food but a way of eating it, anything can be a “tapa”: paella, croquettes, ham cheese, toast, truly anything as long as it’s small and served with your drink (usually free) it’s tapas.

Tapas is not a starter, it’s quite normal to have tapas at weekends. If you come to Spain and you are invited to go for tapas you’ll visit lots of bars and probably only taking a single tapa in each. Each person usually pays in a bar and sometimes we put an amount that we call “fondo” and we pay with it, if there’s money left it’s a good reason to meet people next weekend.

If the tapa is given to you without asking, it will be free, but it’s not a fixed rule, each area has its own rules, in the Basque Country, for example, where they are called “pintxos” and rather than being served for free with every drink you pick them up off the bar and pay for them at the end, the number of cocktail sticks you have on your plate tells the barman how much to charge.

But if you are in Salamanca or here in Zamora just about every bar will give you a portion of something to go with your beer, for free of course., besides the bars are very competitive to offer the best tapa, every year there is a contest and you can vote for the best tapa in your city.

Why do we call them tapas? There are different explanations for the origin of the name. A tapa is a lid or a cover, it’s believed that in the early days of tapas a slice of cheese or ham was given with your drink and placed over it on a small plate. Some people say to keep out flies, others to hide the smell of the bad wine or to keep the wind from blowing your drink everywhere… The fact is that the food was used to cover the drink and that’s the origin of the name.

Podcast 123. Couch Potatoes (Escuchar/ Listen)

Couch Potato

Few people admit to be a couch potato, we aren’t totally truthful when we are asked how many hours a day we watch TV or what kind of programs we watch, in addition we can watch it using cell phones, computers, in the car… it’s even more difficult to know how many hours a day we don’t do anything but looking at a screen sitting in a sofa.

It’s not easy to say that you spend 5 or 6 hours a day watching TV, there’s a social stigma for people who watch too much television specially if you watch reality shows or gossip programs but it’s well considered to watch sports or the latest comedy, we even talk to co-workers about the last football match or the last Dr House’s outrageous idea.

The thing is that to watch television is not always well considered and we usually lie about it.

It seems that the average is about 4 hours a day, we are exposed to more than one hour of advertisements per day and althought we use DVDs and watch videos in the Internet, television is the most usual media

Talking about ages, teenagers and adults among 30 and 45 watch less television than children and people over 50, the Internet and video games are now more popular than television.

Basically it’s the same we keep on looking at a screen but we interact now, we have become interactive couch potatoes.

Podcast 122.

The Downloading Debate

Who hasn’t downloaded the occasional song or film from the internet? Everybody has made it at least once, all of us have looked for that song or that film somebody recommended us and we have downloaded them without considering it “illegal”.

The entertainment industry thinks it’s illegal and asks the governments to regulate piracy. France has introduced a law which punishes persistent abusers and warns them to twelve months without internet access.

But, as always, there are two sides to every story., while some people think than download music from the met is similar to walk into a music store, pick up a CD and leave without paying, others think that it can’t be considered stealing but rather copying, because if you copy a song you never take the property, it would be different if you steal it. It depends on the person you ask.

The anti-downloading claim that the artists lose money to piarcy. However many unknown artists say that thanks to the internet and free downloads they get the exposure they need.

We should even investigate more and think who really earn money besides the artist wether you download legally or illegally. I done legally, the website that hosts the online music benefits a percentage of the takings, the artist only sees a small portion and if the downloading is illegal, the public benefits. The artist earns more or less the same.

I think we will admit that because of the world wide web it’s very difficult to put limits in the net and illegal downloading will become more and more difficult to police, everybody in one moment or another has been and will probably be “ net pirates”

What your astrological sign says about you?

What’s your sign? Do you think there is any relation between your personality and you sign?.

I’m not very sure of this relation but the truth is that when I read a newspaper or magazine I always have a look at the horoscope. There must be some.

I was born in October, I’m Scorpio and the stars say I have self-discipline, I give great advice and I am emotional and intuitive.
Do you want to know if this is true? Well, it’s quite difficult for me to give an opinion about my own character so I’m going to let you judge for yourself what stars say.

Following the stars, Aries are adventurous, active and they have competitive nature. Tauros are determined, they are reliable, they are warm-hearted and they crave stability. Geminis need constant action and change, they are brilliant conversationalists, highly intelligent and adaptable.

People who are born under Cancer sign are romantic, familiar and very imaginative. Leos are generous, optimistic, they are generally the leader and they are often the centre of attention. Virgos are independent but are always thing about other people and they are known by their sincerity.
People born under Libra sign are very socially aware, they have good manners, they are adventurous and they like to be around other people. Sagitarios enjoy travelling, they work well under pressure and are great in emergency situations.

People born under Pisicis sign are very talented, sensitive and can relate to people very well.

Now tell me… How close do these descriptions match your personality?

Podcast 120. Conocer Gente (Escuchar/ Listen)

Getting to know you

Ten years ago dating used to be very easy or vey difficult, it depends on the point of view. If a boy liked a girl he managed to tell her and to date, if he were shy he had to overcome his embarrassment. Girls found it hard to break the ice and they asked friends to help them to ask boys out.

Today things have changed a lot, either boys or girls make the first move and it’s not necessary to make it face to face, sms and social nets like Facebook, Tuenti or Twitter among others are the usual way to meet people and to date somebody you are interested in. Experts say that these methods are ideal for shy people, for people who are very busy and in general for those who find it difficult to strike up a conversation

Among my students tuenti, messenger and sms messages are the most common methods, they send sms even when they are at the school courtyard less than 300 metres from the person they are sending it, indeed it would be easier and faster to get nearer. In this country, like the rest of the world, we are faced a new way of being in contact.

Among adults there are other methods and the one that has impressed me the most is the “speed-dating”, it’s the most amazing and strange way to find somebody who suits you, I think I couldn’t find somebody I would be willing to meet after a five minutes conversation. If I went to a place like this I would be so nervous that I would waste the five minutes telling my name and trying to say something interesting.

Well, it would be very difficult for my generation to adapt to these methods, we are fond of having coffee and talk long conversations to find ssomebody interesting, more than moving from one chair to another after five minutes chatting and trying to find our soulmate

Podcast 119. Geishas (Escuchar/ Listen)

Geishas

When I think of Japan I think in Sushi and Geisha, I have never been there and I don’t know anything about their customs, their way of life, interests, etc.

A friend of mine is going to travel to Tokio next summer and my curiosity has been aroused to know something more about these special women I have only seen in films or read in novels.

There is nothing like this concept in western culture, basically, they are profesional hostesses, wearing brighty-coloured kimonos, and lots of make-up to make their faces pale,
They are trained in dance, singing, music, flower arrangement, conversation and masters preparing and serving tea.

They work in tea rooms known as “o-chaya”, very exclusive places where businessmen organise dinner parties to discuss business where Gehisa not only serve drinks, dance, and sing but also discuss matters of business and even give advine.

Traditionally, geisha were the daughters of geisha, or beautiful girls who were orphaned. It was also common for poor people to sell their daughters to geisha houses where they were educated.
The geisha training process takes a lot of money and time.

At first they are taught by a kind of “mother” called “okamisan”, when they reach a certain level, the girls become “maikos” and they acompany the geisha to learn and at the age of 20 they decide if they are going to become a geisha.

They are not allowed to get married and when they retire they become music and dance teachers, or trainers of young girls who want to be geisha.

Things have changed a lot, today their numbers have fallen to 10,000. Japanese women prefer to have a professional career that doesn’t involve serving men and a new form of geisha has appeared, they are “Conversation Girls”, many of them are from Europe and America, they work in bars and cocktail lounges, they offer a few of the same functions but they are independent and their position is very lucrative and they are very appreciated as English teachers.

Podcast 118. Mejorar tu Castellano (Escuchar/ listen)

¿Quieres mejorar tu castellano?

It’s Difficult to Learn a Language

Do you want to improve your Spanish? Of course you do and that’s the reason to be here listening to this podcast.
Lately I have been talking to somebody who listens to these podcasts and he has told me that despite understanding me very well when I speak here he has problems when he tries to understand native people talking in a normal speed, for example in films, or in a TV interview.

I haven’t magic solutions to learn a language but I have some advice from my own experience. I think it is very imprtant to change some of your habits when you try to learn a language, I’ll explain to you, one of your habits is probably watching TV and listening to the news in your native language and I know it’s hard to change this habit, it’s not pleasant specially at the beginning, to listen to something you only understand 30 or 40 per cent, but if instead of listening to the news in your language you start doing it in Spanish and instead of watching televisión in your language you watch it in Spanish you will be improving your listening comprensión.

To study grammar and vocabulary is also necessary to speak a language, of course, but if you only do that you’ll always translate from your language to Spanish and vice versa and it will be very difficult for you to understand a native speaker talking in a normal situation in a normal speed.

To learn a language you need to practice not only reading and writing, speaking and listening are skills yo have to control and indeed televisión and the Internet are essential resources.. Take notice, follow my advice… change your habits
