Podcast 68.

Let’s go to the cinema

I’m going to go to the cinema, I don’t know what film I’m going to see, I love sitting there watching other people’s stories on the screen.

I’m a bit scaredy-cat so I don’t do well with horror movies, I’ve only seen The Exorcist and some others that experts think you “must see” but the truth is that I pass one hour and a half looking at the floor and I know that sometimes it’s worse what I imagine than the horror film itself.

I’m not a Science fiction fan either but I do like action and romantic movies and I also like fantasy movies and I never get tired of watching films like Willow or The Lord of The Rings.

I usually go to the cinema on Wednesdays, it’s cheaper, Here in my city we pay 6 euros every day except on Wednesdays when we pay………. Euros. I’ve read that there is something similar in America but on Tuesdays. We call it “dial del espectador” and they call it “cheap Tuesday”.

There are three sessions, at 5.30, at 8 and at 10.30. I usually go at 5.30 or 8 and I always follow the same ritual: medium popcorn, medium coke and I sit comfortably in that cozy armchair and I prepare myself to forget everything during the time the film lasts.

Podcast 67.

Compre su coche on line”.

Buying a Car in the Net

My old car is a piece of junk and I've decided to get a new one. I have been looking for a suitable one for nearly a month.

After visiting all the dealers in my town, consulting some magazines specializing in cars and asking for advice from friends and family I decided to buy a Mini: four seats, three doors, six speed transmission, ABS anti-lock breaks, air-conditioning, radio/CD, MP3 adapter, etc.

But, as there is always a “but”, this time the problem was the price, it was too expensive.

Then a friend told me that she had almost bought a car on line and the prices were very reasonable and although I thought it was crazy curiosity made me log in to check it.

I found this advert “ Save time and money. Buy your car on line” . they offer new and used cars, a guide with specifications, prices, photos and financing.

They even help you to sell your old car, you can download a “Seller’s guide” where they show you how to price your car sensibly, to prepare it for sale, to advertise it, they give you advice on how to avoid fraudulent buyers, details to transfer ownership, etc.

The truth is that I never thought I could buy and sell a car sitting at my desk in my sitting-room.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

Podcast 66. Dormir bien (Escuchar / Listen)

To sleep well

To sleep well is essential, I think we don’t realise how important it is until we lie awake in bed a couple of nights staring at the alarm clock for hours because we just can't fall asleep.

My friend Lola has sleep problems and she has never slept for 8 hours. She has tried everything: pills that leave her feeling groggy all day, acupuncture, relaxation, hypnosis... she has followed some regular routines about the exact time she must go to sleep, the books she must read or the music she must listen to help her to get to sleep.

She has visited some specialists, psychologists, psychiatrists, homeopaths, yoga masters, etc and of course she has listened and she has often followed friends and family’s advice like “Get some exercise, don't overdo it, but try some regular swimming or walking” or “Don’t exercise late in the evening, this may disturb your sleep” “ watch television to relax” or “aromatherapy is helpful” “Don't eat or drink a lot late at night” “your bed must be placed facing the north” “remove the mirrors”, etc

Everyone gives his own advice and there are not magic solutions. If you ask me I would say: “have a light dinner, get some exercise and read before sleeping” it works for me 363 days a year, then I have these two days to realise how good is to be a “sleepyhead”.

Podcast 65.

Old friends’ meeting

My friend Alicia is a very lively person and one month ago she thought it would be a good idea to prepare an old friends’ meeting. She took care of everything, looked for the e-mail addresses, wrote everybody and even made the reservation for dinner.

I was not very sure if it was going to be a good idea, some of us hadn’t met for more than 20 years so I thought to make an excuse, an appointment, last minute fever, whatever as long as I didn’t have to go.

But Alicia doesn’t give up easily and I have to admit that on the one hand I didn’t feel like going but on the other hand I was dying of curiosity to see some of these people.

So, the date arrived and there we were, fifteen people involved in a pleasant recollection of two decades: marriages, children, jobs, grandsons, etc. All of us thinking the others were older, less healthy and less fit .

But at the end of the night I came to the conclusion that there were no great differences as time passes for everybody.

I don’t know if I regret having gone to the meeting but as I told my friend the next day, the next time you decide to organize something similar don’t expect me to go these meetings really shock me.

Podcast 64. Escuelas Multiculturales ( Escuchar/ Listen)

Multicultural Schools

As everybody knows I’m a teacher in a small town in Spain, the school year has just started and I realize the scene has changed a lot in our classes.

Some years ago our students were from the town or the villages around, today our classes are multi-ethnic and our students come from different countries.

In my classroom there are two Chinese, three students from Morocco, a Peruvian one, one from Colombia, one from Bulgaria and a girl from Russia.

Some of them have been living in Spain for some time and they understand and speak the language without problems but some have just arrived and they have problems with communication skills. These students get some help from other teachers who teach them not only the language but also to understand our costumes in many cases very much different to their countries.

The effort is worthwhile, all of them will be able to speak Spanish fluently at the end of the school year.

The experience tells us the language is not the main problem for these teenagers, to adapt to our costumes, to our timetables, to our food… it’s more complicated.

Moving to another country involves accepting very many things but teenagers integrate soon and bring to our classes different points of view, different cultures, dynamism and diversity which enriches our students who become culturally sensitive and capable of participating in a multicultural society.

Newcomers are always welcome here.

Podcast 63.

Chain Letters

All of us have ever received a chain letter. We know we shouldn’t forward it to these ten friends as they will curse us for clogging up their mail boxes . But we don’t want the bad karma they say comes from breaking the chain and after thinking about it for some minutes we finally click the button and the message flies to these ten people who will send it to other ten and the result is a million e-mail messages going around the net filling our mail boxes and making us to waste time checking, answering and deleting these messages.

The same chain letters that travelled by mail 40 years ago have moved to a more modern medium now, we don’t need stamps or paper or envelopes, the messages are now sent in a second without cost to the sender. Everything is faster now but the content hasn’t changed and the promises are all the same: good luck, health, love, money, power. You only have to send the letter to these ten friends and you will get the promised award although our friends stop phoning us after getting six or seven of these e-mails.

How can we get rid of this plague?

As everything has a solution in the internet I’ve found a webpage that helps you not only to identify them but they also offer you a guide to “save you from the suffering caused by the evil of chain letters”

Unbelievable, don’t you think so?

Podcast 62.

Empecé a entender a mi vecina.

My Pet

Some years ago I laughed when I listened to my neighbour talking to her dog. She lives alone and had real monologues or dialogues with her pet.

One day, a friend offered us a dog and we accepted. I started to understand my neighbour then.

You have to have a dog to realise how much you can love him.

When you arrive home, it doesn’t matter what time it is, he always comes up to greet you and he stands there beside you waiting for you to stroke him and disappears when you ask him.

If I sit on the sofa to watch television he lies down near me, his leg on my foot to be in contact.

If I go to the kitchen, he comes after me in case I feel generous and give him one of his biscuits. If I get up early he goes out early but if it’s the weekend and I get up late he waits patiently. If I’m in a hurry he chooses the first tree, if we have all the time in the world he plays among them nonstop.

They adapt to everything, to your schedule, to your pace, to your holidays at the seaside , to everything.

I have heard that there is a therapy for elderly people living alone that consists of taking care of a pet that keeps them company, makes them leave the house and mix with other people.

I think the idea is perfect, caring for an animal prevents isolation and loneliness.
The regular walks and the sense of responsibility encourage them to be less apathetic and more active.
