Podcast 64. Escuelas Multiculturales ( Escuchar/ Listen)

Multicultural Schools

As everybody knows I’m a teacher in a small town in Spain, the school year has just started and I realize the scene has changed a lot in our classes.

Some years ago our students were from the town or the villages around, today our classes are multi-ethnic and our students come from different countries.

In my classroom there are two Chinese, three students from Morocco, a Peruvian one, one from Colombia, one from Bulgaria and a girl from Russia.

Some of them have been living in Spain for some time and they understand and speak the language without problems but some have just arrived and they have problems with communication skills. These students get some help from other teachers who teach them not only the language but also to understand our costumes in many cases very much different to their countries.

The effort is worthwhile, all of them will be able to speak Spanish fluently at the end of the school year.

The experience tells us the language is not the main problem for these teenagers, to adapt to our costumes, to our timetables, to our food… it’s more complicated.

Moving to another country involves accepting very many things but teenagers integrate soon and bring to our classes different points of view, different cultures, dynamism and diversity which enriches our students who become culturally sensitive and capable of participating in a multicultural society.

Newcomers are always welcome here.

Podcast 63.

Chain Letters

All of us have ever received a chain letter. We know we shouldn’t forward it to these ten friends as they will curse us for clogging up their mail boxes . But we don’t want the bad karma they say comes from breaking the chain and after thinking about it for some minutes we finally click the button and the message flies to these ten people who will send it to other ten and the result is a million e-mail messages going around the net filling our mail boxes and making us to waste time checking, answering and deleting these messages.

The same chain letters that travelled by mail 40 years ago have moved to a more modern medium now, we don’t need stamps or paper or envelopes, the messages are now sent in a second without cost to the sender. Everything is faster now but the content hasn’t changed and the promises are all the same: good luck, health, love, money, power. You only have to send the letter to these ten friends and you will get the promised award although our friends stop phoning us after getting six or seven of these e-mails.

How can we get rid of this plague?

As everything has a solution in the internet I’ve found a webpage that helps you not only to identify them but they also offer you a guide to “save you from the suffering caused by the evil of chain letters”

Unbelievable, don’t you think so?

Podcast 62.

Empecé a entender a mi vecina.

My Pet

Some years ago I laughed when I listened to my neighbour talking to her dog. She lives alone and had real monologues or dialogues with her pet.

One day, a friend offered us a dog and we accepted. I started to understand my neighbour then.

You have to have a dog to realise how much you can love him.

When you arrive home, it doesn’t matter what time it is, he always comes up to greet you and he stands there beside you waiting for you to stroke him and disappears when you ask him.

If I sit on the sofa to watch television he lies down near me, his leg on my foot to be in contact.

If I go to the kitchen, he comes after me in case I feel generous and give him one of his biscuits. If I get up early he goes out early but if it’s the weekend and I get up late he waits patiently. If I’m in a hurry he chooses the first tree, if we have all the time in the world he plays among them nonstop.

They adapt to everything, to your schedule, to your pace, to your holidays at the seaside , to everything.

I have heard that there is a therapy for elderly people living alone that consists of taking care of a pet that keeps them company, makes them leave the house and mix with other people.

I think the idea is perfect, caring for an animal prevents isolation and loneliness.
The regular walks and the sense of responsibility encourage them to be less apathetic and more active.

Podcast 61. Comprar (Escuchar/ Listen)

Buy Buy Buy

We spend beyond our salaries. I read yesterday in a paper that Irish people spend 30 pc more than they earn.

I’m not really interested in “economy” and like most people do I switch the television off when I heard about the Dow Jone’s index closed sixty-three points down on…. But the real economy, the one we live in day by day is other matter.

How much do you save after paying taxes and purchasing the necessities of life? Not very much indeed, we have become “crazy” consumers, we don’t need so many things but we believe we need them.

Have you realized you have to choose from nine different kinds of toilet paper and sixteen different breakfast cereals in the supermarket? “Need” keeps the “Economy” and it seems that in Economics there is no concept for enough. We’ll never be completely satisfied.

Nearly half of my mails consists of bills, banks trying to lend me money and catalogues trying to make me spend it.

Lately a new trend has arised, the unhealthy is now healthy and they offer us organic products, organic food, organic clothes, green energy. The same companies that sold us food produced using chemical offer us organic food and we think the energy we use is green just because we use a special bulb. They never stop; everything is possible when we are talking about profitable business.

Podcast 60. Estar Sano (Escuchar / Listen)

Todo el mundo quiere estar sano. Intentamos comer sano, hacer deporte y tener hábitos saludables.

Being Healthy

Everybody wants to be healthy. We try to eat healthy food, to practice sports and to have healthy habits. I’ve read in a magazine some good advice, some are well known but other are really weird.

The first one “quit smoking”, there’s absolutely no doubt about that, but listen this:

“Laugh to lose weight” it seems that laughing burns 231 calories a minute and it also boosts the immune system; reduce blood pressure and increases muscle flexibility. As you can see there are a lot of reasons to keep you smiling.

Another weird advice “don’t be a stranger”. Men who are socially awkward have a greater chance of dying of heart disease than the more outgoing people. A 30-year study of 2,100 men shows that introverts are at higher risk of death from heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular disorders.

Fourth advice “drink coffee to help your liver”, people who drink one cup of coffee per day are 20 % less likely to develop liver diseases.

And the last one “Take a rest in the middle of the workout”. The University of Tokyo says that a 20 minutes break between two 30 minutes workout burns more fat than a solid hour of exercise.

I’m completely sure about the first one but I’m not responsible if you don’t lose weight despite being smiling for hours, I can’t assure you that you won’t suffer from heart attacks being more outgoing and of course I don’t know if your liver will be better with that cup of tea, nevertheless I like the idea of taking a rest in the middle of the break… I will tell you about its effectiveness.

Podcast 59.

My Favourite Restaurant. The Blue Cricket.

My favourite restaurant is a vegetarian one that is just round the corner from my office. It’s a small restaurant, decorated in green and yellow. It has smalls rooms with two or three tables in each room, round tables for four or five people and square tables for two or three people.

Its atmosphere is warm and intimate, its chairs are comfortable, it’s spacious but not too big. Big restaurants are usually impersonal like stadiums, it’s not too sophisticated, on the contrary it’s quite down-to-earth and I think that is the secret to make you feel “at home” when you have lunch or dinner there.

And talking about the food, everything they prepare is delicious, its spinach croquettes, its chickpea balls and its spaghetti with tomato sauce or veg lasagne are unique.

They also offer you all kinds of ice-cream for dessert, mushroom ice-cream, peas ice-cream or tomato ice-cream apart form the typical banana, kiwi, strawberry, orange, grape or water-melon ice-creams.

There is only a small “but” and it’s that it’s always full and you have to book in advance, most of the times or two days before you plan to go and I’m not so organised as to know where I’m going to have lunch every day, impossible to know where I’m going to go two days before.

Podcast 58. ¿Donde Quedamos? (Escuchar/ Listen)

Where shall we meet?

It seems easy to meet somebody and if the two people are always on time it is even easier, isn’t it?

The answer is “it depends”, I always have problems when I try to meet my husband. something always happens, for instance if we arrange to meet in a pub or at the cinema, I assume that we will meet by the door and he assumes he must wait inside, so we may end up waiting in the wrong place for 15 or 20 minutes. If we arrange to meet in a street each one understands a different place and sometimes even a different street and we end up in a very bad mood thinking that it's always the other one that doesn't understand.

The other problem may be the time, if we talk about an exact time we may not be wrong but if we are doing something and we say we will meet “when we finish” or “in 10 or 15 minutes” or "at most in half an hour” then we never meet and we end up seeing each other at home.

Lately we try to make clear where and when even checking if our watches have the same time but this is not infallible, we still misunderstand each other and the only thing that helps us a little is the mobile phone and not always because most of the times we don’t hear it.

We are, like Pink Floyd says in the song “Wish You Were Here”, just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl ….. without meeting

Podcast 57. Supersticiones (Escuchar / Listen)

¿Eres Supersticioso?

Are you Superstitious?

Most of us would answer “not at all ” but I’m sure we avoid walking under a ladder if we can ,and it makes us shiver when we see a black cat or crow on the left side of the road and if we break a mirror we bury the pieces in the courtyard quickly in case the legend about having seven years of bad luck comes true.

I am not superstitious but I always wear something red on New Year’s Eve and I put something made from gold inside the glass to drink a toast to the New Year and if I spill some salt I immediately throw it over my left shoulder to strike the nasty spirits and to prevent sickness.

If I am with a friend and she buys a lottery ticket, I always buy one as well, just in case! …. And I always carry a rabbit's foot that a friend gave me telling me it was a good luck charm which would give me good luck and success and to be honest I don’t dare to leave it at home, I would never forgive myself if things began to go wrong.

Each country, each village has its own legends and superstitions, some of them are known all over the world although sometimes there are small differences. In my country people say “You mustn’t get married or embark on something on Tuesdays 13th”,nevertheless;: the American and the British think that the worst day to do it is on Friday 13th.

It seems that “luck” distinguishes an American from a Spaniard. I know it’s a bit ridiculous but the truth is that there are so many other of the year to choose from, that I personally wouldn’t choose Tuesday or Friday 13th.

Anyway, if somebody asks me “ Are you a superstitious person? “ I would answer “No, I’m only cautious, one never knows”. Ah! ! Don’t forget “touch wood”
